Adsorbents for Styrene Monomer Purification
Trace concentrations of tertiary butyl cathechol (TBC) are often added
to styrene monomer feedstocks in order to prevent product polymerization
or undesirable reactions during product storage and shipping. However,
in order to avoid catalyst contamination, this TBC must be removed
upstream of the polymerization process used to manufacture polystyrene.
UOP’s ST-1000 specialty alumina product is highly effective for both
TBC removal and dehydration applications. The ST-1000 product is one of the
most effective for these applications, and boasts a proven global track record.
It has been specially formulated to reduce by-product formation and polymerization
(coking) over the adsorbent, while maximizing both its dehydration and TBC
dynamic capacity.
