UOP Adsorbents in MTBE and ETBE production
UOP has developed molecular sieve separation technologies for etherification
units in order to both recover methanol and remove oxygenates from
the MTBE or ETBE reactor effluent C4 raffinate stream.
UOP Methanol Recovery units (MRUs) are typically designed to recover 1% methanol
from the raffinate stream and recycle it back to the feed. The MRU adsorbents
reduce the methanol content of the raffinate steam to less than 10 ppm.
UOP Oxygenate Removal units (ORUs) remove the water, methanol, tert-butyl alcohol
(TBA) and dimethyl ether (DME, for MTBE units) or diethyl ether (DEE, for ETBE
units) to less than 10 ppm. There are more than 25 ORUs licensed worldwide
in etherification and Oleflex complexes.
