Refrigerant Drying

UOP is the world's leading supplier of molecular sieve desiccants for air conditioning and refrigeration systems in the automotive, appliance, and commercial construction industries.

Water can enter a refrigeration system both when it is manufactured and throughout its useful life, via migration through hoses, fittings, and other components. If not controlled, system moisture can result in freeze-up of capillary tubes or expansion valves, corrosion of metal parts due to moisture or acids formed by refrigerant hydrolysis, and formation of sludge that can plug the expansion device. Molecular sieve desiccants are used to control this moisture and prevent these problems from occurring.

UOP has introduced several generations of MOLSIV desiccants in response to the changing needs of the refrigeration and air conditioning industry, each specifically formulated to provide the highest drying capacity. These XH desiccants have been formulated to provide high chemical compatibility with the particular refrigerant and lubricants used to prevent any reactions which could also cause system failure. XH desiccants possess the high mechanical strength and particle integrity necessary to prevent crushing or attrition of the desiccant particles, especially in high vibration services such as automotive air conditioning. These features ensure unparalleled levels of desiccant cost effectiveness and system operating reliability.

Historically, UOP’s XH desiccants were the industry standard for their cost effectiveness and high operating reliability demanded by automotive and stationary refrigeration systems manufacturers and their end-customers.

When the 1987 Montreal Protocol dictated the use of non-CFC refrigerants to prevent ozone depletion and global warming, UOP quickly responded to the challenge with the development of the outstanding new XH-7, XH-9, and XH-11 desiccants, which allowed the refrigeration industry to meet their critical legislated deadlines. In March 1998, the American Chemical Society recognized the significance of this contribution by awarding its prestigious "Heroes of Chemistry" award to the UOP development team.
