Responsible Care®
What is Responsible Care®? Responsible Care is a voluntary initiative of the
global chemical industry focused on improving performance, communication and accountability.
Responsible Care commits companies, through their national chemical associations, to work
together to continuously improve the health, safety and environmental performance of their
products and processes. It is a major contribution by the industry towards achieving
sustainable development.
UOP is committed to Responsible Care and its values and is a member of the American
Chemistry Council (ACC). The initiative addresses the following areas: Safety & Health;
Pollution Prevention; Process Safety; Distribution; Community Awareness & Emergency Response;
Product Stewardship; and Security.
Who runs the initiative? The International Council of Chemical Associations
(ICCA) manages Responsible Care at the global level.
In the United States, the ACC requires that all member companies make a commitment to
Responsible Care. UOP operations in other countries support Responsible Care through their
respective national associations.
Do all chemical companies belong to Responsible Care? No, it is a voluntary
initiative but some national associations make commitment to Responsible Care a condition of
membership. Many of the world's leading chemical manufacturers have signed on to Responsible
Care. The initiative was started in Canada in 1985, and has since spread to over 50 other
countries around the world.
At UOP, Responsible Care practices have been embedded within company Health, Safety &
Environmental policies to ensure that UOP operations promote the Responsible Care ethic
seamlessly within daily operations worldwide.
How does Responsible Care involve external stakeholders? Responsible Care
commits companies to be open and transparent with stakeholders at the local, national and
international level. It encourages dialogue and cooperation, and has helped industry work
much more closely with local communities, governments, trades unions, international
organizations, environmental groups and others to understand and address their concerns.
Responsible Care also promotes cooperation with governments and organizations in the
development and implementation of effective regulations and standards, and helps companies
to meet or exceed these requirements.
UOP facilities around the world actively share experiences with others via community outreach panels, customer contacts, trade associations and peer company visits.
