UOP Honored With 22 Recognitions/Awards in 2004

In many respects, 2004 was a good year, with 22 different recognitions or awards being given to UOP and its people. The recognitions varied, covering expertise in the technical area, customer service, plant safety, and outstanding individuals.

Miscellaneous Awards
UOP honored for outstanding accomplishments or service:

The National Institute of Standards and Technology in the US Commerce Department, granted UOP an Advanced Technology Program (ATP) award to develop breakthrough technology for “Selective Liquid-Phase Oxidation of Methane to Methanol.”

Manufacture Alabama!, a trade association that promotes the manufacturing industry in Alabama, presented UOP’s Mobile, AL, plant with a first place safety recognition award.

Individual Awards (Employees & Retirees)
Six awards were given to individuals for outstanding service or contributions:

Dr. Edith M. Flanigen (retiree) was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame and received the Lemelson-MIT Lifetime Achievement Award. She is the first UOP inventor to be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Edith was recognized as a role-model inventor, whose scientific contributions had substantial global benefit. Edith holds or shares more than 200 patents on molecular sieves and their applications.

Dr. Mary L. Good (retiree) received the Vannevar Bush Award from the National Science Board of the National Science Foundation. Mary was honored for her diverse accomplishments in academia, government and the industry.

Thomas McBride, Jr., Patent, received the “Chief Justice Edward D. White Scholarship Award” from Loyola University. This award is given annually to a student of the graduating law school class. Tom was also invited to lecture at the Loyola Comparative Advocacy Program in London.

Peter Pujado, Olefins & Detergents Development, received the George Lappin Award for exemplary service to the AIChE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers).

Constante P. Tagamolila (Tante) (retiree) was chosen as one of 100 “Outstanding Augustinians of the Century” by the University of St. Augustine in the Philippines.

Mary Jo Wier, Gasoline Catalyst Development, received an award from ConocoPhillips along with an invitation to their Best Practices meeting to discuss reforming operations. The award recognized Mary Jo’s “overall tremendous positive attitude” and customer dedication.

Elected or Appointed Positions
Twelve people were elected to honorary positions:

Mark Mucek, Process Equipment Skill Center, was named Chairman of National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) International Specific Technology Group 34, Refining and Gas Processing Corrosion.

Jim McHale, Treasury, was elected President of the Treasury Management Association of Chicago (TMAC). In addition, he is TMAC’s regional delegate to the national organization.

For AIChE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers) National activities:

Dennis O'Brien, Detergents & Petrochemicals Technology Center, was named Programming Vice Chair for Refining, AIChE Fuels & Petrochemicals Division.

Peter Pujado, Olefins & Detergents Development, was named Director, Transport & Energy Processes Division.

Lynn Rice, Light Fuels Technology Center, was named Director, Fuels & Petrochemicals Division.

Gavin Towler, Process Design & Development, was named Director, Fuels & Petrochemicals Division, Member of Chemical Engineering Technology Operating Council.

Bipin Vora, Process Technology & Equipment Development, was named Programming Vice Chair for Petrochemicals, AIChE Fuels & Petrochemicals Division.

Alan Zagoria, Energy Operations, was named Member of Chemical Engineering Education Operating Council.

For AIChE Chicago Local Section:

Narayanan Sankaran, Training, Systems, & Service Skill Center, was elected Secretary.

Clint Butcher, Light Fuels Technology Center, was elected Treasurer.

Alan Zagoria, Energy Operations, holds a non-elected position, Student Outreach.

Steve Rosenblum, Process Technology & Equipment Application Support, holds a non-elected position as Membership Chair.
