UOP and its Employees Honored with Recognitions/Awards in 2005

National Medal of Technology among the awards

Throughout 2005, UOP and its employees were recognized by organizations around the world in the areas of technology, customer service, safety and outstanding achievements. Following is a list of those awards and their recipients.

Miscellaneous awards
UOP honored for outstanding accomplishments or service:

The National Medal of Technology (2003) was awarded by President Bush to UOP representatives at a ceremony in March in Washington D.C. for “over 85 years of sustained technical leadership and innovation for the worldwide petroleum refining and petrochemical industries, and for commercialization of adsorbents, catalysts, process plants and process technology that have strengthened America’s global competitiveness and benefited quality of life throughout the world.”

IChemE (Institution of Chemical Engineers) awarded a UOP team the Haden Freeman Award for Engineering Excellence for good engineering and design systems and practices in the commercialization of a divided wall column.

Individual awards (employees and retirees)
Awards given to individuals for outstanding service or contributions:

Dr. Edith M. Flanigen (retiree) was appointed Fellow, American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Also in 2005, Dr. Flanigen, a pioneer in the study of molecular zeolites, was on the National Research Council Committee on “An Assessment of the Impact of the NSF’s Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers Program”; Peer Committee, Section 9, National Academy of Engineering; and Advisor at the Academy Design Forum of the National Inventors Hall of Fame on the future Middle School Science, Mathematics, and Technology Academy.

Mr. James Harris received the ISA Award for Professional Excellence by the Instrumentation, Systems and Automation Society (ISA).

Dr. William J. Koves, Process Technology & Equipment Process Equipment Skill Center, was awarded the ASME Post Construction Standards Committee Certificate of Appreciation. Bill was awarded the Certificate of Commendation by the Pressure Vessel Research Council in recognition of outstanding contributions to the advancement of pressure vessel technology and Research and in the work of the PVRC Design Division. Bill was awarded the Pressure Vessel Research Council Certificate of Excellence Award by the Pressure Vessel Research Council.

Mr. John Swift was inducted into the Founders Club, an association related to the Chemical Heritage Foundation recognizing greater than 25 years’ contributions to the petrochemical industry.

Mr. Bipin Vora was recognized jointly by the Catalysis Society of India; MS University, Vadodara, India; and the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers for his contributions to chemical process technology. Mr. Vora holds 200 patents and has published 120 journal articles.

Dr. Stephen T. Wilson, a senior R&D associate, was awarded the ACS Award in the Chemistry of Materials by the American Chemical Society for his work with molecular sieves. Wilson holds 60 patents and has published 35 journal articles.

Simon R. Bare, Research Advanced Characterization, was named to the editorial board of the journal Catalysis Letters.

James Harris, Process Technology and Equipment Aromatics Technology Center, was elected to grade of Fellow by Instrumentation, Systems and Automation Society (ISA).
