UOP President and CEO Carlos A. Cabrera Inducted into University of Kentucky’s Engineering Alumni Hall of Distinction
UK grad finished first in chemical engineering class of ‘73
On March 29, the University of Kentucky announced that UOP’s
President and CEO Carlos A. Cabrera
has been inducted into the University of Kentucky’s Engineering Alumni Hall of
Distinction, along with three other UK alums.
According to Thomas W. Lester, dean of the UK College of Engineering, the
University’s Engineering Hall of Distinction identifies individuals of remarkable
achievement for this prestigious recognition, who have made significant contributions not
only to their fields of endeavor, but to the quality of life both in our nation and abroad.
A native of Ecuador, Cabrera serves as president and chief executive officer of UOP
LLC, a Des Plaines, Ill., firm that is the world’s largest provider of process
technology and services to the refining and petrochemical industries. The company’s
technology is used in automobiles, biodegradable detergents and modern plastic materials.
He joined the company immediately after graduating first in his chemical engineering class
at UK in 1973. He rose through the ranks as a development engineer, as district
representative in London, area manager for Latin America and the Caribbean and vice
president for business development. He has overseen the development of new technology,
including small-scale production of hydrogen. He and his wife Cathy live in Northbrook,
Ill., and have two children.
Carlos has been granted seven patents by the U.S. Patent Office, and is author of numerous
publications and frequently serves on many industry panels as a worldwide recognized
business and technical leader. He is a member of AIChE, a member of the Board of
Directors of NPRA and a member of the NPRA Petrochemical Committee. In addition to his
bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Kentucky, he
holds a master's degree in business administration from the University of Chicago.
An award ceremony is scheduled for April 7 in the University’s library. Read the full text of
