Hydrotreating
A powerful alliance
UOP and Albemarle have joined forces to bring you the broadest range of advanced hydrotreating catalysts and technologies
Hydrotreating catalysts: an alliance to offer you more
UOP and Albemarle formed the Hydroprocessing Alliance in 2006 to support the production of clean transportation fuels worldwide. UOP is a leading developer of hydrocracking catalysts, and hydrotreating and hydrocracking process technology. Albemarle is a leading developer and supplier of innovative hydrotreating catalysts and technologies for refineries. This alliance combines their strengths to provide the refining industry with a broad portfolio of process and catalyst offerings for:
- Middle distillate hydrotreating
- Vacuum gas oil hydrotreating
- Mild hydrocracking
- Hydrocracking
- Fixed-bed residue hydrotreating
Crystaphase Products:
UOP had partnered with Crystaphase Products to offer CatTrap technology, designed to provide the largest possible trapping volume for particulate contaminants in any feedstock, while providing superior flow distribution. The technology has lengthened the reactor run life when unacceptable pressure drop has limited the cycle length of previous runs. CatTrap systems typically require less space than traditional grading systems and provide the additional benefit of no pressure drop over the reactor cycle length.
CatTrap material has been used in more than 1,000 applications and more than 200 refineries, and the list is growing. UOP’s experience in specifying CatTrap material for commercial units has increased the efficiency of reactor volume use, and has helped maximize cost savings and performance.
UOP will work closely with your team to identify the best available technologies suited to your business goals.

Albemarle Guard Bed
Through the UOP and Albemarle Hydroprocessing Alliance, we offer a complete portfolio of guard bed catalyst that protect Hydrotreating catalyst against fouling and maximize unit cycle length. The Hydroprocessing Alliance combines the strength of both partners to insure design of the guard beds for a gradual change of catalyst activity and sizing to efficiently balance particle entrapment at varying catalyst levels without fouling. Included in the guard bed system is Albermarle catalysts which offer protection against fouling caused by inorganic elements such as Nickel, Vanadium, Arsenic, and Silica.

Albemarle Pretreat Catalysts
Albemarle’s high activity pretreat catalyst is critical to preventing Nitrogen poisoning/deactivation of acid sites on any hydrocracking catalyst. Nitrogen in the feed can cause low activity and shorter cycle life for the refinery. The Hydroprocessing Alliance combines Albemarle’s advanced STARS and Nebula with UOP Superior Hydrocracking catalyst to give our customers the best technology system available on the market.
